I heard the news about GM being replaced by Cisco in the Dow Jones Industrial Average beginning today, and that was the first thing that came to mind. It’s been nine and a half years since a NASDAQ stock was added to the Dow. Intel and Microsoft were added in November 1999, replacing Union Carbide and Sears. After them, Cisco would have been the next logical choice for a technology issue, being entrenched as it is in the infrastructure of the Internet. I guess the people behind the index decided that the Net is not a fad. It’s a comforting thought.
What do you think of this change? Do you think there will be more technology stocks added to the Dow in the near future?
